The device is suitable for shaft applications where a simple two-pole magnet rotates above or below the sensor IC and the zero position can be programmed into the device with simple SPI commands. The absolute magnetic angular position resolution is 14 bits = 16384 positions per turn measured as digital values on the serial interface (SPI). AS5048 provides PWM output as well as SPI or interface to provide absolute angle measurement for microcontrollers. Instead of considering the chip's initial zero position and the exact matching of the magnet poles it uses during mechanical design, the zero position can be programmed into the AS5048's internal memory during assembly via simple SPI or commands (no special programming equipment required). The AS5048 also has very high operating tolerances, including deviations in the center position between the chip and the mating magnet, deviations in the air between the chip and the mating magnet, and temperature variations between -40°C and +150°C. The AS5048 magnetic rotary encoder provides more accurate measurements than previous austriamicrosystems magnetic rotary encoder products. Its 14-bit measurement analog front end provides measurement resolutions as low as 0.0219 degrees. Linearization and averaging by the microcontroller can achieve angular measurements accurate to 0.05 degrees.
