Close the daylight plate and gently press it so that the water spreads over the entire surface of the prism without air bubbles or dry spots. Wait 30 seconds to allow the sample to reach room temperature. Hold the daylight plate in the direction of a light source and look into eyepiece. You will see a circular field with graduations in the center. You may need to focus the eyepiece to see the graduations clearly. The upper part of the field should be blue, while the lower part should be white. Take the reading where the blue and white dividing line crosses the graduated scale. Clean the instrument with a soft, damp cloth after measurement. Calibrate to 0 using distilled water because the alcohol content of distilled water is 0%. This ensures accurate measurement and adjustment of focus ensures a clear reading.
